Using your voice, you can say, “Where’s the nearest gas station?” or “What’s on my calendar today?”, and the \u003ca href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_personal_assistant\"\u003eintelligent personal assistant\u003c/a\u003e (IPA) will respond by finding information and relaying it from your phone or sending commands to other apps. \u003cdiv class=\"image\"\u003e\n  \u003cimg\n    src=\"https://s3.amazonaws.com/digitalgov/_legacy-img/2016/09/600-x-425-Artificial-intelligence-making-possible-new-computer-technologies-NicoElNino-iStock-Thinkstock-499152762.jpg\"\n    alt=\"Artificial intelligence (AI) is making possible new computer technologies.\"/\u003e\u003c/div\u003e\n\n\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, AI is not only being used in the context of a personal assistant. Self-driving cars are moving closer to reality, retailers are using anticipatory shipping in the hopes to send you items \u003cem\u003ebefore\u003c/em\u003e you need them, and banks are using AI to detect fraud to monitor accounts and alert the owners when questionable transactions occur.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 id=\"ai-defined\"\u003eAI Defined\u003c/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo it is here, but \u003ca href=\"http://dupress.com/articles/what-is-cognitive-technology/\"\u003ewhat is AI\u003c/a\u003e? AI is an intelligent system’s ability to improve predictions, accelerate problem solving, and automate administrative tasks, ushering in an era of automation. A few of the areas of AI are:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eCognitive analytics\u003c/em\u003e\u003c/strong\u003e\u003cem\u003e, where machines learn from experience and build associations, help develop technology systems that evolve hypothesis, draw conclusions and collect instincts and experience.\u003c/em\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eParallel information processing\u003c/em\u003e\u003c/strong\u003e\u003cem\u003e, aided through chips custom designed for AI applications, help parallel processing of vast amounts of data.\u003c/em\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eIntelligent automation\u003c/em\u003e\u003c/strong\u003e_ combines automation with artificial intelligence that allows knowledge workers, from physicians to investment analysts to plant supervisors, to process, understand and use information._ \u003cdiv class=\"image\"\u003e\n  \u003cimg\n    src=\"https://s3.amazonaws.com/digitalgov/_legacy-img/2016/09/600-x-450-Autonomous-car-interior-concept-Chesky_W-iStock-Thinkstock-528490678.jpg\"\n    alt=\"Autonomous self-driving car interior concept.\"/\u003e\u003c/div\u003e\n\n\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003ch2 id=\"ais-role-in-government\"\u003eAIs Role in Government\u003c/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has been \u003ca href=\"https://www.whitehouse.gov/webform/rfi-preparing-future-artificial-intelligence\"\u003ehosting a series of public workshops\u003c/a\u003e about artificial intelligence and machine learning. “There are tremendous opportunities and an array of considerations across the federal government in privacy, security, regulation, law, and research and development to be taken into account when effectively integrating this technology into both government and private-sector activities,” Deputy U.S. CTO Ed Felten wrote in a \u003ca href=\"https://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2016/05/03/preparing-future-artificial-intelligence\"\u003eMay 3 blog post\u003c/a\u003e.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAI is already being \u003ca href=\"http://www.cnbc.com/2016/06/16/ai-will-soon-provide-government-services.html\"\u003eexplored in the UK to enhance government services\u003c/a\u003e. The tool in use is named \u003ca href=\"http://www.ipsoft.com/amelia/\"\u003eAmelia\u003c/a\u003e, which is a cognitive intelligence that can perform machine learning and communicate with customers using natural language in order to fulfil a variety of roles. It has previously been used as an IT service desk agent and mortgage broker at different banks. Agencies in the U.S. \u003ca href=\"http://www.nextgov.com/emerging-tech/emerging-tech-blog/2016/08/frequently-automated-questions-ai-future-faq/131186/?oref=ng-HPriver\"\u003eare exploring “chatbots”\u003c/a\u003e like Amelia to automate some aspects of customer service. \u003cdiv class=\"image\"\u003e\n  \u003cimg\n    src=\"https://s3.amazonaws.com/digitalgov/_legacy-img/2016/04/600-x-400-Robot-with-chat-bubble-Kirillm-iStock-Thinkstock-174260156.jpg\"\n    alt=\"Robot with chat bubble\"/\u003e\u003c/div\u003e\n\n\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFCC Chief Information Officer David Bray’s recent article, \u003ca href=\"https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-can-artificial-intelligence-make-us-more-free-less-bray-phd\"\u003eHow Can Artificial Intelligence Make Us More Free, Less Distracted, and More Effective?\u003c/a\u003e, discusses the development of AI tools in a collective manner, to thoroughly identify true needs, which in turn will result in significant advantages of how public service is done and how services are delivered. Bray also assesses the relevance of \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/cm-topics-button-component/2016/08/04/that-six-letter-word-change/\"\u003echange management\u003c/a\u003e to organizations in this quickly approaching age of collaborative thinking. For Change Agents “to be creative problem solvers who continue to proactively search for new ways of delivering results differently and better” is what we need now in public service.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 id=\"ai-serving-millions-daily\"\u003eAI: Serving Millions Daily\u003c/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eArtificial intelligence is used in smartphones, cars, banks, and houses on a daily basis. The integration of AI into our normal lives will continue to expand as well as becoming \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/cm-topics-button-component/2016/04/20/the-data-briefing-chatbots-and-the-rise-of-conversational-commerce-and-citizen-experience/\"\u003ea tool to assist Federal agencies to better serve their audiences\u003c/a\u003e.
