Winners of the \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/cm-topics-button-component/2014/12/23/announcing-the-winners-of-the-first-ever-white-house-3d-printed-ornament-challenge/\"\u003eWhite House 3D ornament contest\u003c/a\u003e were announced last month. In January, we’re highlighting projects that show how 3D printing can support diverse federal initiatives, from scientific research to space exploration.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 id=\"scientific-modeling\"\u003eScientific Modeling\u003c/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003ca href=\"http://3dprint.nih.gov/\"\u003eNIH 3D Print Exchange\u003c/a\u003e enhances learning and research through scientific 3D printable models. Website visitors can search, download, and share biomedical 3D print files, modeling tutorials, and educational material. The website also holds the distinction of being the first government-sponsored website dedicated specifically to 3D printing.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBuilding scientifically or medically accurate models is a laborious process, even for people with 3D modeling experience, and few models are available online. As an open, community-driven tool, the NIH 3D Print Exchange fills those gaps in availability and accessibility. Users can generate high-quality models in minutes by uploading a file or accessing a database. Video tutorials and instructional materials about 3D modeling software are also available, and collaboration is fostered through a discussion forum.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“The great features of the NIH 3D Print Exchange are the tools to process or convert scientific data into printable 3D models: No one else has these tools available via a Web interface,” said Darrell Hurt, Ph.D., Structural Biologist and Project Lead for the NIH 3D Print Exchange. “Although there are other repositories out there for 3D models, ours is sponsored by the NIH, which gives some of the models in our database (those that we certify) a little more authority.”\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAvailable models include a \u003ca href=\"http://3dprint.nih.gov/discover/3dpx-000822\"\u003efractured face\u003c/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"http://3dprint.nih.gov/discover/3dpx-000207\"\u003einsulin\u003c/a\u003e, and a \u003ca href=\"http://3dprint.nih.gov/discover/3dpx-000006\"\u003ecartoon model of the HIV virus\u003c/a\u003e. Several aspects of 3D technology will be covered: modeling, printing, and visualization. Subject matter experts in government, academia, and the private sector will present on topics that include bioprinting, physician and patient education, medical and surgical devices, augmented reality for medicine, and 3D technology policies.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe festival will also serve as the official announcement for the 3D Print Exchange API.
