Their redesigned website homepage features a crisp, simple layout, focused on the words \u0026ldquo;18F knows how to work within government because we\u0026rsquo;re already here,\u0026rdquo; alongside a schematic illustration of connected government products.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 6:\u003c/strong\u003e Congratulations to the team! And be sure to let our team know when a new site launches, either with an email or a note on the USWDS public Slack channel!\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 7:\u003c/strong\u003e So let\u0026rsquo;s get into it with USWDS 3.6.1, a small but mighty point release with a number of useful fixes.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 8:\u003c/strong\u003e Here are some of the key improvements in USWDS 3.6.1\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eStacked responsive table reads properly in Safari.\u003c/strong\u003e We fixed a bug that prevented the stacked responsive table from announcing properly in the Safari browser.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTile borders are less distracting.\u003c/strong\u003e We fixed a regression that unintentionally darkened the borders of radio tiles and checkbox tiles.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWrapping breadcrumbs now wrap properly.\u003c/strong\u003e We updated breadcrumb wrapping to allow not only wrapping between elements, but wrapping within very long breadcrumb elements in the wrap variant.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eImproved display of tooltip.\u003c/strong\u003e We fixed an issue with the tooltip that could cause it to flicker when it needs to be repositioned.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eImproved image display in the open banner.\u003c/strong\u003e We improved the alignment of one of the images in the gov banner.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd finally, we \u003cstrong\u003efixed a rare mobile menu bug in Safari\u003c/strong\u003e where for a small range of viewport widths just at or below the desktop breakpoint, the mobile menu doesn\u0026rsquo;t open properly.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 9:\u003c/strong\u003e And that\u0026rsquo;s USWDS 3.6.1. We\u0026rsquo;ll talk a bit more about what these individual terms mean in a bit, but together they\u0026rsquo;re a statement of guiding values. A strategic tool that helps us make valuable decisions.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt\u0026rsquo;s been almost four years since we developed our existing mission and vision. As we plan for the future — in our existing roadmap and beyond — it\u0026rsquo;s time to reevaluate and see whether our mission is still driving us forward in ways that help us deliver on the value teams expect from us.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 11:\u003c/strong\u003e I\u0026rsquo;ll be talking about these ideas today alongside Anne Petersen, the USWDS Experience Design Lead. Anne, can you introduce yourself for folks?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnne: Hi everyone: I’m Anne, my pronouns are they/them, and I’m the U.S. Web Design System’s newest full-time federal employee, our Experience Design Lead. In the interest of inclusion and accessibility, I’m a white person with short brown hair and small brown glasses. I’m aiming for a fairly androgynous look if that helps. Again, very glad to be part of the team.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDan: Thanks Anne. They\u0026rsquo;ll be joining me a little later, but first I\u0026rsquo;d like to set the stage and talk about where we are today and where we\u0026rsquo;ve been.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 12:\u003c/strong\u003e If you attended last month\u0026rsquo;s call, I\u0026rsquo;d like to assure you that while we talked about some of our history in the context of our roadmap planning, I\u0026rsquo;m not simply going to cover the same ground we covered last week — but those who\u0026rsquo;ve been following along with the design system over time will likely recognize a few of the sights along the way.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, USWDS, as a public product, turns eight next week. My son just turned seven, and I know that — at least in human terms — we aren\u0026rsquo;t toddlers any more. We have some opinions, for sure, and are able to articulate them with increased clarity. But we\u0026rsquo;re also very much the same as we\u0026rsquo;ve always been.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 13:\u003c/strong\u003e So let\u0026rsquo;s look back to September 2015 — a world away, but also not so long ago.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 14:\u003c/strong\u003e On September 28, 2015, we had our first public \u0026ldquo;hello world,\u0026rdquo; introducing ourselves for the first time with \u003ca href=\"https://18f.gsa.gov/2015/09/28/web-design-standards/\"\u003ea blog post on the 18F blog\u003c/a\u003e. USWDS 0.8 followed on October 13, 2015. This blog post is still live on the newly redesigned 18F site, and we\u0026rsquo;ve linked to it in the chat. On screen we see a screenshot from the date of the original post, which reads \u0026ldquo;Introducing the U.S. Web Design Standards\u0026rdquo; with an old iteration of the gov banner, and the old 18F logo with its sky blue logo, with a hex code of \u003cstrong\u003e#1188ff\u003c/strong\u003e.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 15:\u003c/strong\u003e The post calls out a question that is still relevant today: “Is it possible to create a shared set of tools to provide consistent, beautiful, and easy-to-use government websites?”\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt might seem disappointing that this question is still relevant today, but I\u0026rsquo;m not sure I see it that way. Here in 2023, we see an ongoing commitment to the challenge this blog post articulates.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt\u0026rsquo;s noteworthy that USWDS still exists eight years later, and that there\u0026rsquo;s an engaged human-centered design practice all across government that has only grown in its influence and output. Digital experience is a part of the law. Customer experience and a culture of design work that lowers the barriers to entry for government services is an Executive priority.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe are shaping the future of government digital services every day with this work, and I\u0026rsquo;m humbled that this community, doing the work day in and day out, are engaged with what we do, pushing us forward, testing us, and inspiring us with the work you do, and adding to a common body of knowledge that subsequent teams can build from.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u0026ldquo;Is it possible?\u0026rdquo; we asked on Day One. Yes. The work is slow, but the tortoise progresses.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 16:\u003c/strong\u003e Our first design principles, stated on Day One, still influence how we work. You\u0026rsquo;ll probably recognize every item here as essentially common knowledge at this point. And here I\u0026rsquo;ll read directly from the post:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMake the best thing the easiest thing.\u003c/strong\u003e We believe that making tools that align with the values and needs of digital workers in the federal government will drive adoption.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBe accessible out of the box.\u003c/strong\u003e We created tools that seamlessly meet the standards of 508 accessibility, from colors to code.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDesign for flexibility.\u003c/strong\u003e We aim to give the American people a sense of familiarity when using government services, while allowing agencies to customize these tools to fit their unique needs.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eReuse, reuse, reuse.\u003c/strong\u003e We reviewed, tested, evaluated, and repurposed existing patterns, code, and designs from dozens of government and private sector style guides to make use of tried-and-true best practices.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe didn\u0026rsquo;t have an explicit mission or vision in those days, but you can see these principles in our current \u003ca href=\"https://designsystem.digital.gov/design-principles/\"\u003edesign principles\u003c/a\u003e and our \u003ca href=\"https://designsystem.digital.gov/about/product-values/\"\u003eproduct values\u003c/a\u003e.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 17:\u003c/strong\u003e In January 2018 we retired the name \u0026ldquo;Design Standards\u0026rdquo; to call ourselves what we actually are as a product: a \u0026ldquo;Design System,\u0026rdquo; not requirements established by consensus and approved by a recognized body as a NIST Standard, but a collection of principles, guidance, and code that helps disparate teams align on common goals and design from common tools.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 18:\u003c/strong\u003e Twelve months later came the 21st Century Integrated Digital Experience Act, on December 20, 2018, two days before a month-long government shutdown, calling out the requirement for \u0026ldquo;a consistent appearance\u0026rdquo; for websites and digital services.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 19:\u003c/strong\u003e And a year after that came the publication of the Website Standards that explicitly tie USWDS to the requirements in 21st Century IDEA.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 20:\u003c/strong\u003e At this point, we —then, a two-person team maintaining the design system — decided we needed a mission and a vision. But why?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 21:\u003c/strong\u003e Our mission and vision was meant to give us stability through all this change, to keep us focused on what was really important, and on what we knew was important to the teams that use or might use the design system.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 22:\u003c/strong\u003e So in 2020, we developed the mission and vision that \u003ca href=\"https://designsystem.digital.gov/about/\"\u003eyou can see on the USWDS website today\u003c/a\u003e. Our mission:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUSWDS is a design system for the federal government. We make it easier to build accessible, mobile-friendly government websites.\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo my eyes, this is a humble and practical mission statement that grows directly from the Day One design principles. It was, in fact, important for us to reiterate that we are a design system in our mission statement, and to use that space to reiterate key values also called out in the law: accessibility and mobile friendliness.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 23:\u003c/strong\u003e Our 2020 \u003cem\u003evision\u003c/em\u003e was really important to us.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWe envision empowered agency digital teams who share solutions and use effective human-centered design practices.\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eProcess was the key here. This vision is all about the teams we support and is meant to echo the USWDS Design Principles: the foundation of what we build comes from starting with real user needs, earning trust, embracing accessibility, promoting continuity, and listening.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf all the progress I\u0026rsquo;ve seen in the last four years, that progress in the service of this vision has been the most heartening. I already mentioned it above, but if this is the foundation of what we want to accomplish, that foundation is strong and getting stronger.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 24:\u003c/strong\u003e And here we are in 2023 with a design system that makes it easier to build accessible, mobile-friendly government websites, and a community of agency digital teams who share solutions and use effective human-centered design practices.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIs it as easy as it could be to build websites? No.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAre we all as empowered and effective as we could be? No.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere\u0026rsquo;s still plenty of opportunity to grow within this mission and vision, but increasingly we\u0026rsquo;ve noticed more and more value, more and more of what teams need and expect from us, that doesn\u0026rsquo;t feel like it\u0026rsquo;s expressed in this mission and vision. So we needed to ask ourselves\u0026hellip;\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 25:\u003c/strong\u003e Is this still the whole story?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 26:\u003c/strong\u003e Do our mission and vision still express our values and value?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 27:\u003c/strong\u003e Do they help guide our decisions?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 28:\u003c/strong\u003e And do they still inspire?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 29:\u003c/strong\u003e I think the honest answer is yes and no. We\u0026rsquo;ve talked to a lot of teams in the last few months, and we\u0026rsquo;ve done a lot of planning for what we want to accomplish in the near term, and there are a couple of themes to what we\u0026rsquo;ve heard that fall somewhat outside the scope of our mission and vision.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 30:\u003c/strong\u003e The first is commonality — or the importance of the elements of \u003cem\u003eappearance\u003c/em\u003e, of \u003cem\u003eexperience\u003c/em\u003e, of \u003cem\u003efamiliarity\u003c/em\u003e that we share as government services.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 31:\u003c/strong\u003e The second is value over time — how the value of using a design system shouldn\u0026rsquo;t only be at the beginning, when you build, but ongoing: in how you stay up-to-date over time.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 32:\u003c/strong\u003e I\u0026rsquo;d like to start with the idea of value over time and what\u0026rsquo;s perhaps an obvious observation: That the design system should deliver value over the lifetime of a service.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 33:\u003c/strong\u003e That there\u0026rsquo;s value in making it easier to update.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 34:\u003c/strong\u003e Easier to get new improvements — new features and bugfixes. Better accessibility. Components and patterns that are easier to use.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 35:\u003c/strong\u003e That there\u0026rsquo;s value in making it easier to change. To evolve. As we talked about last time, in reducing the cost of change from the perspective of both implementation cost and justification cost.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 36:\u003c/strong\u003e In general, as we keep making improvements to the design system, it should be easier and easier to stay up to date.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 37:\u003c/strong\u003e In fact, we think that this is where the biggest value of the design system lies: after a site or service is launched instead of before.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 38:\u003c/strong\u003e Eight years in, we now know that this is the beginning, and that we\u0026rsquo;re committed to the long term. This project is a long-term process and USWDS is a long-term solution and partner. We will support long-term solutions and success, to be a service that will be here to support teams for the next eight years, ten years, twenty years.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 39:\u003c/strong\u003e What will the future look like in eight years? Ten years? Twenty years?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 40:\u003c/strong\u003e We know that it will be different from today. And that together, we will shape it. Because that\u0026rsquo;s what we\u0026rsquo;ve done and that\u0026rsquo;s what we\u0026rsquo;ll keep doing. This is why we\u0026rsquo;re working toward solutions like web components, so we can continuously refine and redefine our solutions, based on real research with real users — and not just our own research, but research from across agencies and user journeys — then scale those improvements across the design system. Over time, we will see the increasing breadth and depth of our common knowledge as an incalculable asset, and an ever-improving case for common solutions.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 41:\u003c/strong\u003e A case for common solutions, common knowledge, \u003cem\u003ecommonality\u003c/em\u003e.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 42:\u003c/strong\u003e As you recall, one of our Day One principles was \u003cstrong\u003eDesign for flexibility\u003c/strong\u003e, which we described as \u0026ldquo;a sense of familiarity when using government services, while allowing agencies to customize these tools to fit their unique needs.\u0026rdquo;\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf our services were cars, we\u0026rsquo;d want folks to be able to get into any of them and know how to drive. An accelerator and a brake pedal where you expect them. A steering wheel within arm\u0026rsquo;s reach. Seat belts, windshield wipers, and air bags.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome of these vehicles would be more rugged, some more fancy. Each would have their audience and their purpose, but each have the same familiar, easy-to-use fundamentals that mean that anyone could drive any of them. And maybe they\u0026rsquo;d all share the same kind of distinctive license plate as well.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur \u003cem\u003eprocess\u003c/em\u003e identifies, codifies, scales, and refines these commonalities. Experimentation, creativity, and research move them forward. The process of developing the design language of familiar, easy-to-use government services is an ongoing dynamic that shapes our evolution.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 43:\u003c/strong\u003e So there were some key values that fell outside our mission and vision. We are maturing as a product, a team, and a community, and we felt that the time was right to revisit our mission and vision, and take a fresh look at how we think strategically. So, did we take that fresh look, Anne?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 44:\u003c/strong\u003e Anne: Thanks Dan. We did.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 45:\u003c/strong\u003e I’m here to tell you about our approach, as nonlinear as it may have felt, so that you understand one way to do this. It’s not \u003cstrong\u003ethe\u003c/strong\u003e way — like we said last time, we’re a team that’s maturing along with the rest of you — but it is \u003cstrong\u003ea\u003c/strong\u003e way, and it seems to have worked for us.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 46:\u003c/strong\u003e First, we set out some definitions for everyone to work from. Mission and vision are approached with a lot of variability elsewhere, and with a lot of crossover. Out there in the universe of missions and visions, some places differentiate the two in one way, or another, and even sometimes I see them kind of swapped in definition. These two words —mission, and vision — kind of get fuzzy and overlap if you look at them too closely.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, we paired the two and worked on both. At times we prioritized one or the other, but they’re so interrelated we needed to work with them alongside each other.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 47:\u003c/strong\u003e Here are those two words, mission and vision — fuzzy, and overlapping. This process felt like this sometimes.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 48:\u003c/strong\u003e But how \u003cstrong\u003ewe\u003c/strong\u003e defined them: Your mission is your purpose, writ large. It should be ambitious but believable, and from the point of view of the people who benefit from it. It reflects in practical terms what we do \u003cstrong\u003enow\u003c/strong\u003e, but also what we expect we’ll still be doing in 10 to 15 years. It encapsulates, and is unique to, whatever it’s for, in this case USWDS. A great mission is compelling, clear, unique, and memorable. And it needs to be short.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 49:\u003c/strong\u003e Really short. Like, that’s-too-many-words-you’ll-have-to-return-some kind of short. This slide says “Make it short” with “make it” crossed out and another editing mark indicating the whole sentence should just be: “short.”\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 50:\u003c/strong\u003e Your vision describes broadly what’s in the future and how you hope to get there. It’s your elevator pitch for the impact you could have, or how you summarize what you do to someone completely unfamiliar.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eMost\u003c/em\u003e are aspirational but not unrealistic. So for us: what does the design system solve — for who — how does this help — and what’s the outcome in our ideal world? These can change every 5 years or so, but should be continuously looking into the future. If you’ve achieved your vision, you’re probably aiming too low.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt also \u003cem\u003eexplains\u003c/em\u003e more than the mission. For us, the mission is the briefest encapsulation of what we do, whereas the vision shows what we want to accomplish, broadly.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut also, having a mission and vision is great, but how do we put them into action? \u003cem\u003eThat’s\u003c/em\u003e where your polestar comes in, and later your roadmap. But first, to polestars:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 51:\u003c/strong\u003e Polestar. This is what you measure your actions against, your guiding mechanism for decision-making. It describes how the team should \u003cstrong\u003edo\u003c/strong\u003e the thing, motivating us all and showing how we contribute to the mission and vision. A polestar can also help you figure out if you’re about to prioritize something that doesn’t contribute to the core point of the organization.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 52:\u003c/strong\u003e Now, to move to our guiding principles \u003cem\u003efor this work\u003c/em\u003e. First, we wanted to eliminate jargon and stick to plain language, with a fairly broad definition of both, in order to achieve clarity. We want \u003cem\u003eanyone\u003c/em\u003e to be able to understand our mission and vision. Polestars, on the other hand, bring a little more clarity \u003cem\u003einternally\u003c/em\u003e than externally — including for those who know and use the system, in our case — so can have just a smidge more technicality to them.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 53:\u003c/strong\u003e The often-used measure you may have heard before is if a family member might understand. I like to use the measure of “would anyone you just met understand?” Someone you \u003cstrong\u003ejust met\u003c/strong\u003e — who you don’t know the expertise of necessarily — so you need to make it as simple as possible before you hear from them what angle they might be interested in, if they’re interested enough to learn more. Simple, and clear.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 54:\u003c/strong\u003e Next, does it sound like us? Does it sound like how we usually communicate? Does it support our actual continuous product values and design principles, as we practice them?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 55:\u003c/strong\u003e But also — let’s be real. Like, \u003cstrong\u003eus\u003c/strong\u003e us. We’re humans, behind the screen. A great team doing great work — and thank you to the full set of humans that all worked on this, it was really tough work – but still, we’re a team composed of people. As I’ve mentioned previously, ultimately we are two — count ‘em, two — full-time federal staff members plus a core team of contractors. We do have a bit of other federal staff support, and then also a terrific community. And thanks for being part of that. But let’s be both ambitious \u003cstrong\u003eand\u003c/strong\u003e realistic about what we can accomplish together.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 56:\u003c/strong\u003e And does it sound like ONLY us? What is \u003cstrong\u003epurely\u003c/strong\u003e the U.S. Web Design System and no other product or system or program? What can \u003cstrong\u003ewe\u003c/strong\u003e do that others can’t?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 57:\u003c/strong\u003e But we also don’t want to get too lofty, or we’ll lose our head in the clouds. Abstract grandiosity does not support clarity. It has to be rooted in what we do day-to-day, and specifically encapsulate what we do \u003cstrong\u003enow\u003c/strong\u003e.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 58:\u003c/strong\u003e Speaking of time, and to help provide some grounding, I should note the typical cadence of change for these tools. A \u003cstrong\u003emission\u003c/strong\u003e changes the least often. It’s your purpose; it’s why you’re here. It’s enduring. We can fine-tune it rarely, but it shouldn’t change often.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy frequency of change, that’s followed by \u003cstrong\u003evision\u003c/strong\u003e, which you can adjust a little as you learn more or your landscape changes.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter vision, the next thing that may change a little more frequently may be your polestar — \u003cstrong\u003ehow\u003c/strong\u003e you do what you do to reach your vision, which can change as you find and create new, improved and more efficient methods and processes.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut back to your core — your mission and vision. You can \u003cstrong\u003erely\u003c/strong\u003e on these underlying principles, your mission especially, which should not change with the direction the wind’s blowing.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 59:\u003c/strong\u003e Maybe most importantly at this point, we need to avoid mentioning specific technologies. Not only are they jargon, but they also limit us. What if in four years or eight years a technology we mention is no longer used or available?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 60:\u003c/strong\u003e This is a list of some \u003cem\u003eexact\u003c/em\u003e words of phrases we wanted to avoid for various reasons — either they’re jargon, or they mean different things to different people, or they’re a specific technology or approach that would \u003cem\u003elimit\u003c/em\u003e our ability to adjust as we needed to. Things like playbook, template, standards, sustainable, code, mobile, continuous improvement, universal design — even design system and agile.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 61:\u003c/strong\u003e This slide says Who, What, How and Why. To start on this process of uncovering and articulating these key concepts, we got the core team together for a workshop. In this workshop, we started with these core questions: \u003cstrong\u003eWho\u003c/strong\u003e is the U.S. Web Design System’s audience? \u003cstrong\u003eWhat\u003c/strong\u003e are our goals for the system? \u003cstrong\u003eHow\u003c/strong\u003e can we achieve those goals? \u003cstrong\u003eWhy\u003c/strong\u003e is it important that we do? That is, what’s the design system’s \u003cstrong\u003eimpact\u003c/strong\u003e?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 62:\u003c/strong\u003e We then used \u003cem\u003ethose\u003c/em\u003e as source material for thinking about our purpose — that is, our mission — and what we want to accomplish — that is, our vision — creating two fields of variously colored virtual sticky notes, all of them unreadable at this scale.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 63:\u003c/strong\u003e But then we refined to get fewer, more focused ideas.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 64:\u003c/strong\u003e And refined again, to get to even fewer.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 65:\u003c/strong\u003e Sometimes we had to take a step back for a wider view, reaching back into earlier versions to pick up concepts that we thought at the time weren’t working. But sometimes those earlier ideas helped us make connections or get to an approach we hadn’t considered yet.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 66:\u003c/strong\u003e This process honestly got frustrating — showing here even more different sizes and colors of stickies with labels and also a select few that appear in frames — but since I’ve done this kind of missioning and visioning a few times before, I could tell everyone that that’s incredibly normal. Happens \u003cem\u003eevery time\u003c/em\u003e in this process. At this point we could tell we didn’t have it yet, but we didn’t know what “it” \u003cem\u003ewas\u003c/em\u003e, quite.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 67:\u003c/strong\u003e So we looked at some other examples, while doing essentially a really intense, long session of \u003cem\u003eworking through our wording\u003c/em\u003e. Fine-tuning through to \u003cem\u003ejust\u003c/em\u003e the \u003cem\u003eright\u003c/em\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eword\u003c/strong\u003e. Improve or adapt or define or refine. They’re \u003cem\u003edifferent\u003c/em\u003e, and words matter.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 68:\u003c/strong\u003e But here, where we concluded, are just three colored stickies with labels in navy blue, medium blue, and red, still unreadable. But this is where we wrapped up. What they \u003cem\u003eactually\u003c/em\u003e came out to be… well, that’s next. I’ll pass it over to Dan.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 69:\u003c/strong\u003e Dan: Thanks Anne. Yes, I think I used the words \u0026ldquo;dark night of the soul\u0026rdquo; as we passed through one of the more despairing parts of the process. And there were some. You know, we really value talking about the process of design work — of which writing work is very much a part — since we like to show our work. But it isn\u0026rsquo;t always pretty.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDoing this kind of work can be like watching dreams be born and die. And that dark period between death and rebirth is where you can really question your choices.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eE.B. White had this quote: “Humor can be dissected, as a frog can, but the thing dies in the process and the innards are discouraging to any but the pure scientific mind.”\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLuckily, we were writing a government mission statement. And hopefully our innards might find some additional use.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo what did we find?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 70:\u003c/strong\u003e First, we wanted to step back and just identify ourselves. Who are we?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 71:\u003c/strong\u003e We identified words like \u003cstrong\u003eDesign\u003c/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eSystem\u003c/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eResource\u003c/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eReference\u003c/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eLibrary\u003c/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eService\u003c/strong\u003e, and \u003cstrong\u003eStyleguide\u003c/strong\u003e, among others. But really there was only one good answer to the question of who we are:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 72:\u003c/strong\u003e Our identity: \u003cstrong\u003eThe design system for the federal government\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 73:\u003c/strong\u003e About that \u0026ldquo;the.\u0026rdquo; We\u0026rsquo;ve been really cautious about using \u0026ldquo;the design system,\u0026rdquo; favoring \u0026ldquo;a design system\u0026rdquo; when we talked about ourselves, but it did beg the question, are there others?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 74:\u003c/strong\u003e Well of course there are other design systems. And there are rules and guidance for various elements of design and usage that span the entire federal government, but we are the only government design system developed for use across the federal government. This was perhaps an instance where our inclination to humility might just make things less clear. So \u0026ldquo;the design system\u0026rdquo; it is.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 75:\u003c/strong\u003e Why do we exist? The eternal question.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 76:\u003c/strong\u003e We identified some action words that express what we do. Words like \u003cstrong\u003eDesign\u003c/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eAlign\u003c/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eShape\u003c/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eConnect\u003c/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eMaintain\u003c/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eImprove\u003c/strong\u003e, and \u003cstrong\u003eDefine\u003c/strong\u003e.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 77:\u003c/strong\u003e We also identified some descriptive words that express how we want to be. Bit by bit, improvement by improvement we\u0026rsquo;re finding and fixing bugs, asking questions, listening, identifying what works and what can work better, trying new things, failing, trying again, failing better, being intentional, celebrating successes, putting in the work, always moving forward, and trying to answer the question: \u0026ldquo;Well, how should this be?\u0026rdquo; and in the answers to that question, shaping the future.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 80:\u003c/strong\u003e And that\u0026rsquo;s where we found our mission: \u003cstrong\u003eShaping the future of government digital services\u003c/strong\u003e. Something we do together, over time. Do we see more teams using more current version of the design system?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRight now, I know it\u0026rsquo;s working because I feel the potential and the terror. I feel the potential in what we\u0026rsquo;re able to do, and I feel the terror in knowing where we still fall short. But this, I think, is good. There\u0026rsquo;s no room to be complacent.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 94:\u003c/strong\u003e And I want to also acknowledge that any mission and vision can\u0026rsquo;t include everything. Is it meaningful that accessibility, mobile-friendliness, and human-centered design no longer appear in the mission and vision by name? In every real way, that answer is no. And that\u0026rsquo;s because our USWDS design principles aren\u0026rsquo;t going anywhere and are just as important as they\u0026rsquo;ve ever been. It\u0026rsquo;s worth reiterating that the foundation of what we build comes from starting with real user needs, earning trust, embracing accessibility, promoting continuity, and listening. Those are our shared values that do not change.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlide 95:\u003c/strong\u003e So what\u0026rsquo;s next? For now, nothing. We\u0026rsquo;ve spent the last month working through this process, and we\u0026rsquo;re going to sit with it for a moment.
