But it’s really hard to build winning digital tools and services when you don’t have the right skills on your team. So today we’re asking, what are the key skill sets that every digital organization needs on their digital dream team?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 id=\"key-roles-for-digital-services\"\u003eKey Roles for Digital Services\u003c/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEverything is much easier if you start with an effective \u003ca href=\"https://digital.gov/topics/governance/\"\u003egovernance\u003c/a\u003e structure, one that clarifies the roles of all the players on your team, including executives, coaches, and players. You’ll need executive-level support from an agency \u003cstrong\u003eChief Information Officer\u003c/strong\u003e (CIO), \u003cstrong\u003eChief Customer Officer\u003c/strong\u003e (sometimes called a \u003cstrong\u003eChief Experience Officer\u003c/strong\u003e), and \u003cstrong\u003eChief Communications Officer\u003c/strong\u003e. You’ll also need coaches who determine strategic direction and oversee day-to-day management, such as the agency \u003cstrong\u003eWeb (or Digital) Director\u003c/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eDigital Communications Strategist\u003c/strong\u003e.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen, of course, you need a team with the right mix of skills. These are the key players every web or digital team needs to build and deliver useful information and services:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCustomer Experience Specialist\u003c/strong\u003e - Ensures digital services are designed to flow in a logical manner, from start to finish (including across channels), to help customers complete their task as quickly and easily as possible.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDesigner\u003c/strong\u003e - Helps define users, problems, and potential solutions. (Note that, even with a design system, \u003ca href=\"https://18f.gsa.gov/2020/02/06/even-with-a-design-system-you-still-need-a-designer/\"\u003eyou still need a designer\u003c/a\u003e.)\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDeveloper\u003c/strong\u003e - Builds digital tools that work well, and are accessible and easy to use.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDigital Analyst\u003c/strong\u003e - Ensures digital services are achieving their goals and objectives, and provides insights to improve customer experience across all channels.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIT Accessibility Specialist\u003c/strong\u003e - Ensures systems and content meet Section 508 requirements, and are designed for ease of use by all persons, regardless of ability.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSocial Media Manager\u003c/strong\u003e - Engages customers and promotes products and services via social channels.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUser Experience Specialist\u003c/strong\u003e - Engages real users to observe behaviors, understand expectations, and design digital products to meet user needs.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWriter or Editor (Digital Content)\u003c/strong\u003e - Develops and curates content that is written for the web, and easy to find, understand, and use.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEvery web or digital team also needs support from key players with agency-wide roles and responsibilities such as:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e508 Program Manager\u003c/strong\u003e - Coordinates the implementation of agency-wide IT \u003ca href=\"https://digital.gov/topics/accessibility/\"\u003eaccessibility\u003c/a\u003e programs. The federal government encourages us to \u003ca href=\"https://www.sba.gov/federal-contracting/contracting-guide\"\u003econtract with small businesses\u003c/a\u003e to buy products and services. \u003ca href=\"https://www.sba.gov/federal-contracting/contracting-guide/types-contracts\"\u003eSmall business set-asides\u003c/a\u003e help provide a level playing field for small businesses and are often an easy way to build your team quickly.
