From helping students and families make more informed decisions about \u003ca href=\"https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/\"\u003ecollege selection\u003c/a\u003e to modernizing our country’s immigration system to opening up thousands of data sets and collections for Americans to leverage, this work has reimagined how government services and resources should be provided to the public.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd today, we’re taking it a step further.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe’re releasing the \u003ca href=\"http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/omb/memoranda/2016/m_16_21.pdf\"\u003eFederal Source Code policy\u003c/a\u003e to support improved access to custom-developed Federal source code. The policy, which incorporates feedback received during the \u003ca href=\"https://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2016/03/09/leveraging-american-ingenuity-through-reusable-and-open-source-software\"\u003epublic comment period\u003c/a\u003e, requires new custom-developed source code developed specifically by or for the Federal Government to be made available for sharing and re-use across all Federal agencies. It also includes a pilot program that will require Federal agencies to release at least a portion of new custom-developed Federal source code to the public and support agencies in going beyond that minimum requirement.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis isn’t a novel concept for government. Today, you can view the \u003ca href=\"https://github.com/WhiteHouse/petitions\"\u003esource code\u003c/a\u003e for our petition platform, \u003ca href=\"https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/\"\u003eWe the People\u003c/a\u003e. You can see \u003ca href=\"https://github.com/department-of-veterans-affairs/vets-website\"\u003ehow the VA\u003c/a\u003e built \u003ca href=\"https://www.vets.gov/\"\u003eVets.gov\u003c/a\u003e, where Veterans can now \u003ca href=\"https://www.vets.gov/healthcare/apply/\"\u003eapply for healthcare online\u003c/a\u003e. You can contribute to the \u003ca href=\"https://github.com/GSA/data.gov\"\u003eopen source code\u003c/a\u003e that powers the General Service Administration’s \u003ca href=\"https://www.data.gov/\"\u003eData.gov\u003c/a\u003e, where you can find open data from across government – and much more.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow we’re taking these established best practices government-wide.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy making source code available for sharing and re-use across Federal agencies, we can avoid duplicative custom software purchases and promote innovation and collaboration across Federal agencies. By opening more of our code to the brightest minds inside and outside of government, we can enable them to work together to ensure that the code is reliable and effective in furthering our national objectives. And we can do all of this while remaining consistent with the Federal Government’s long-standing policy of technology neutrality, through which we seek to ensure that Federal investments in IT are merit-based, improve the performance of our government, and create value for the American people.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs agencies across the Federal Government take steps to improve access to their source code, the amount of available Federal open source software will grow. In the coming months, we will launch a new website – \u003ca href=\"https://www.code.gov/\"\u003eCode.gov\u003c/a\u003e – so that our nation can continue to unlock the tremendous potential of the Federal Government’s software.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is, after all, the People’s code. Explore it. Learn from it. Improve it.
