The challenge is unique because NIDA will fund potential biotech startups much earlier than most investors, incubators or traditional methods of funding, like small business grants.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn its heels, NASA also launched a health-related challenge today, aiming to improve the resiliency of the human body in space.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"image\"\u003e\n  \u003cimg\n    src=\"https://s3.amazonaws.com/digitalgov/_legacy-img/2016/06/600-x-335-Screen-Shot-NASA-VT-Challenge-homepage.jpg\"\n    alt=\"Screen capture of the homepage of NASA\u0026#39;s website for the Vascular Tissue Challenge.\"/\u003e\u003c/div\u003e\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003ca href=\"https://www.neworgan.org/vtc-prize.php\"\u003eVascular Tissue Challenge\u003c/a\u003e offers $500,000 in prizes to the first three teams that can can “create thick, human vascularized organ tissue in an in-vitro environment while maintaining metabolic functionality similar to their in-vivo native cells throughout a 30 calendar day survival period.”\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEssentially, the space agency wants solvers to submit technologies that can advance research and one day grow tissues and organs in orbit to ensure the health of astronauts injured or recovering from injuries sustained during lengthy missions.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XijhKzOTK0\u0026amp;w=600]\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSince its launch in September 2010, Challenge.gov has seen a steady increase in use among both federal agencies and citizens.
