In 2016, the double-digit mobile growth will continue to accelerate and surpass 50% for almost all agencies. This includes government sites.\n  \u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\n    \u003cb\u003eApps become more Web-like.\u003c/b\u003e With \u003ca href=\"http://www.webpronews.com/google-updates-app-indexing-docs-2015-12/\"\u003eGoogle App Indexing beginning to take shape and deep linking in apps\u003c/a\u003e, the walls between apps and the Web will start to blur further.\n  \u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\n    \u003cb\u003eApp apathy increases.\u003c/b\u003e People will install fewer apps and \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2015/10/27/trends-on-tuesday-users-spend-most-of-their-time-in-social-apps/\"\u003econtinue to only use five to seven regularly for communication/social, streaming media and games\u003c/a\u003e. Apple’s decision to continue to offer their starter iPhone with only 16GB of memory will limit people’s ability to store many things on their phone. As Internet connections and Web browsers have evolved—particularly mobile Web browsers and mobile devices, which are upgraded faster than desktop computers—\u003ca href=\"https://medium.com/inside-birdly/why-you-shouldn-t-bother-creating-a-mobile-app-328af62fe0e5#.1r1l50in3\"\u003ean optimized responsive website can fulfill almost all the needs of an app\u003c/a\u003e. The cost of building and maintaining an app is becoming more apparent and more organizations will choose to bypass.\n  \u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\n    \u003cb\u003eSMS as apps takes hold.\u003c/b\u003e The new \u003ca href=\"https://www.producthunt.com/@thinker/collections/sms-text-assistant-services\"\u003etrend of smart messaging instead of apps\u003c/a\u003e continues to grow as it becomes more mainstream and useful, especially as app apathy grows.\n  \u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\n    \u003cb\u003eWearables grow slowly.\u003c/b\u003e The wearable market continues to grow, but slowly, as the public waits for ‘the killer app’ that makes them NEED a wearable device and app developers wait for a sizable audience to build something for.\n  \u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\n    \u003cb\u003eThe Internet of Things (IOT) blossoms.\u003c/b\u003e IOT quietly delivers on the hype that wearables couldn’t; from connected-cars to WiFi cameras to home thermostats, the diversity of opportunities for IOT devices to reshape our world will continue to flourish.\n  \u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ol\u003e \u003cdiv class=\"image\"\u003e\n  \u003cimg\n    src=\"https://s3.amazonaws.com/digitalgov/_legacy-img/2015/12/600-x-400-White-mobile-smartphone-with-smart-home-application-alexey_boldin-iStock-Thinkstock-503489169.jpg\"\n    alt=\"White mobile smartphone with flat design smart home apps\"/\u003e\u003c/div\u003e\n\n \n\u003col start=\"8\" type=\"1\"\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\n    \u003cb\u003eFlat design dominates.\u003c/b\u003e Apple, Google and Microsoft have all \u003ca href=\"http://www.innovation-series.com/2013/09/24/apple-ios-7-evolves-to-flat-design-merging-with-developing-mobile-industry-interface-standards/\"\u003emoved away from skeuomorphic design and have established similar “flat” design standards\u003c/a\u003e, which makes it much easier to design across the three leading mobile and desktop OS platforms.\n  \u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\n    \u003cb\u003eSecurity becomes a bigger priority.\u003c/b\u003e After seemingly endless hacks and security breaches in 2015, Internet security is going to become a large priority and responsibility for digital organizations to manage. \u003ca href=\"https://developer.washingtonpost.com/pb/blog/post/2015/12/10/moving-the-washington-post-to-https/\"\u003eMedia organizations are starting to take notice\u003c/a\u003e and adapt, and \u003ca href=\"https://pulse.cio.gov/https/domains/\"\u003egovernment agencies are also moving to HTTPS\u003c/a\u003e, but we have a long way to go. \u003ca href=\"http://thenextweb.com/google/2015/12/17/unsecured-websites-are-about-to-get-hammered-in-googles-search-ranking/\"\u003eGoogle is going to start favoring sites with secure connections\u003c/a\u003e, so hopefully that will help incentivize and move the Web forward.\n  \u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\n    \u003cb\u003eGovernment doubles down on tech talent.\u003c/b\u003e “Good enough for government” technology starts to carry more weight as \u003ca href=\"http://fedscoop.com/epa-to-grow-digital-services-with-godbout-at-helm\"\u003emore agencies invest in\u003c/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https://fcw.com/articles/2015/04/10/digital-services-budgets.aspx\"\u003estart staffing up their own digital services teams\u003c/a\u003e to bring exceptional technologists in to lead their organizations in the digital age.
