These polls can spark some great engagement, but you’ll want to keep a few things in mind before getting started:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eTo stay within the social media general solicitations of feedback exemption to the Paperwork Reduction Act, we need to make sure that we’re using polls to get low stakes, voluntary input from users. Keep your polls fairly light and avoid asking about anything that will be used in the creation of formal policy or rule making.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ePolls are active for 24 hours each, and are preset from the time you started your poll (though you can end it early if needed).\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eTwitter doesn’t currently allow photos or other media within polls.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eKeep your poll choices short and sweet- each is limited to 20 characters max.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ePolls eat up some of your tweet characters, so make sure your call to action is no more than 116 characters.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eImportant things to know for voters:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eVoters will receive a push notification to view the results when the poll closes.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eVotes are private – pollers and pollees alike will not know who voted.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eOnly one vote per tweep.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eTweeps can respond, share, retweet and like polls just like any other tweet.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the National Archives, we worked with our General Counsel’s office and our Paperwork Reduction Act Clearance Office to be sure the polls did not violate the PRA. After contacting OMB for further guidance, everyone concluded that our proposal to use the polls fell within the “ratings and ranking” exemption in the \u003ca href=\"https://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/omb/assets/inforeg/SocialMediaGuidance_04072010.pdf\"\u003e2010 social media memo\u003c/a\u003e:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“…More broadly, “information” does not include functions common to social media tools that allow the public to rate, rank, vote on, flag, tag, label, or similarly assess the value of ideas, solutions, suggestions, questions, and comments posted by website users…” (excerpted from page 6 of the memo)\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003c/blockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur first poll was a very low stakes test, via our \u003ca href=\"https://twitter.com/ThisisArchives\"\u003e@ThisIsArchives\u003c/a\u003e account, where each week a new NARA staff member shares their daily experience.
