At our desks, many of us are using a 24 inch (or even bigger) monitor.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHow big is your smart phone? Way smaller than a desktop monitor.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe user will have a radically different experience on a desktop, and they are usually expecting a different experience.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe graphic below really shows the issue—all of the devices below display a responsively designed application. Ultimately, users will have a poor experience.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 id=\"your-customers-may-not-be-able-to-see-the-big-picture\"\u003eYour Customers May Not Be Able to See the Big Picture\u003c/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYour application should have a mission and stick to it. This may mean that you need multiple applications. The mobile world is unique in that people want to be directed to a single source to solve their issue. You should \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2015/06/01/finding-the-best-mobile-moment-is-the-first-stepping-stone-to-anytime-anywhere-government/\"\u003efind your mobile moment\u003c/a\u003e like the Transportation Security Administration did with their “What Can I Bring” app.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 id=\"your-customers-may-get-lost\"\u003eYour Customers May Get Lost\u003c/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe deeper your users dig into a mobile application, the more likely they will become lost or disoriented. Users that become lost will start using the phone’s navigation and soon find themselves completely out of the application, most likely \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2014/07/29/trends-on-tuesday-avoid-the-app-graveyard/\"\u003enever to return\u003c/a\u003e.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 id=\"your-customers-may-give-up\"\u003eYour Customers May Give Up!\u003c/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCustomers that only want one simple piece of information or to perform a single task will not want to keep clicking links and waiting for long pages to load. If they get lost or lose confidence, they will leave. We know that the average person will only wait three seconds for a Web page to load \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2014/11/18/trends-on-tuesday-speed-matters-when-measuring-responsive-web-design-performance-load-times/\"\u003ebefore they move on\u003c/a\u003e. For example: using “back to the top” links interspersed down the page and “what’s on this page” links to each section on the page.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAdditionally, in a previous article, \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2014/10/28/trends-on-tuesday-8-ways-to-format-tables-for-responsive-web-design/\"\u003eTrends on Tuesday: 8 Ways To Format Tables for Responsive Web Design\u003c/a\u003e, we provided some thoughts on how to display tables and charts in responsive design applications that are still usable.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut, these are really only band-aids covering a bigger problem.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 id=\"how-can-you-solve-the-issue-of-having-too-much-stuff-on-your-site\"\u003eHow Can You Solve the Issue of Having Too Much Stuff on Your Site?\u003c/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs more devices flood the market, it’s going to be harder to keep the message short. Here are two ways agencies are addressing this reality.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eCreate mobile experiences that cater to the specific information and tasks your mobile users want. You have to know your customer and \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2015/03/10/trends-on-tuesday-more-time-consuming-complex-tasks-on-mobile-platforms/\"\u003ehow they are using mobile to interact with your information and services\u003c/a\u003e. You can look at analytics and survey data to find your users’ mobile moments. You also need a dash of creativity— content and services not popular on the traditional desktop may be immensely popular for mobile audiences, again, see TSA’s What Can I Bring?\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eCreate Once, Publish Everywhere. The COPE model, popularized by National Public Radio, has been something \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2015/04/13/the-content-corner-structured-content-challenges-and-lessons-learned/\"\u003ea number of agencies hope to emulate\u003c/a\u003e. In this approach, you focus on structuring your data so that you can easily use the right amount of information for the right channel (e.g., 140 characters for a tweet). A number of agencies have been looking at how to implement this model and share information across government with the \u003ca href=\"http://gsa.github.io/Open-And-Structured-Content-Models/index.html\"\u003eOpen and Structured Content Working Group\u003c/a\u003e.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ul\u003e\n"}
