The initiative is a united effort to bring together a diverse group of concerned citizens to improve communities and the government which represents them.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe event will connect software developers, entrepreneurs and concerned citizens from all over the nation so they can collaboratively create, build, and invent new solutions using publicly-released data, code and technology to solve challenges relevant to federal, state and local governments. The National Day of Civic Hacking provides citizens an opportunity to do what is most quintessentially American: roll up our sleeves, get involved and work together to improve our government.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the words of Code for America’s Catherine Bracy, “civic hacking is when citizens see something in the public realm they think can work better and decide to take it upon themselves to push for change. It’s about creating something bigger than the sum of its parts.”\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGovernment offices are providing data and technology to those citizens so that they can come together, propose meaningful, technology-based solutions, and have an impact around the issues they care about.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 id=\"whats-the-value-for-an-agency\"\u003eWhat’s the value for an agency?\u003c/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ca href=\"http://www.data.gov/\"\u003eEvery agency has data\u003c/a\u003e—and every agency has a mission that impacts citizens and has stakeholders. This year we are excited to offer three federal government core themes for \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2013/05/15/what-is-a-civic-hacker/\" title=\"What is a Civic Hacker?\"\u003ecivic hackers\u003c/a\u003e to focus on: “Oceans ’15,” Climate, and Disaster Response.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCivic hacking during the event is in no way limited to these three verticals; they are provided to illustrate some major areas of interest where a collaboration could have powerful and immediate impact.
