There are the usual “lose weight,” “quit smoking,” or “exercise more” resolutions. Another popular set of resolutions involves learning new skills. So, if you are looking for a way to improve yourself while helping others, think about making a resolution to learn how to build a mobile app that can be used in disaster relief.

On December 14, 2014, Data.Gov launched a portal for disaster datasets. Inspired by the White House’s Innovation for Disaster Response and Recovery Demo Day, Data.Gov collected over 140 Federal disaster datasets. Data.Gov then created a portal to encourage volunteers to become data stewards and develop apps for the First Innovation Challenge.

There are numerous free resources online to start learning how to create apps.
