Election and voting hashtags were trending all day long as people around the country hit the polls to vote for senators, representatives, governors and more.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd while plenty of people were really excited to simply let their friends and followers know they had cast a ballot, several others had questions about how to find their polling place or the hours it was open.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"image\"\u003e\n  \u003cimg\n    src=\"https://s3.amazonaws.com/digitalgov/_legacy-img/2014/11/USAgov-RT-tweet-2014-elections.jpg\"\n    alt=\"USAgov-RT-tweet-2014-elections\"/\u003e\u003c/div\u003e\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eSo the USA.gov social media team launched an election day real-time engagement effort to answer those questions and highlight just how important voting is.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe monitored trending election hashtags on Twitter (like \u003ca href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/election2014\"\u003e#Election2014\u003c/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/GoVote2014\"\u003e#GoVote2014\u003c/a\u003e) keeping an eye out for tweets from people who needed help on election day.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"image\"\u003e\n  \u003cimg\n    src=\"https://s3.amazonaws.com/digitalgov/_legacy-img/2014/11/600-x-432-USAgov-tweets-2014-elections.jpg\"\n    alt=\"600-x-432-USAgov-tweets-2014-elections\"/\u003e\u003c/div\u003e\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eTo spread the message of how important it is to get out and vote, we encouraged people to share their \u003ca href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/electionselfies\"\u003e#ElectionSelfies\u003c/a\u003e with us, showing off those coveted “I Voted” stickers.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe retweeted nearly 70 pictures from people of all ages from all across the country, and we personally thanked close to 100 people for taking the time to vote and spreading the word to others about how important voting is. (You can check out a \u003ca href=\"http://blog.usa.gov/post/101840945177/image-description-thanks-to-everyone-who-got-out\"\u003esmall selection of pictures people shared with us\u003c/a\u003e on our blog today.)\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was such a simple thing for us to do on election day, and it dovetailed perfectly with our mission of helping connect people to government information and services. Plus it supported our goals of building relationships and increasing engagement.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost importantly, it created a great experience for the people that engaged with us.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThrough our small effort, we were able to humanize “the government,” and introduce new people to the \u003ca href=\"http://www.usa.gov/\"\u003eUSA.gov\u003c/a\u003e brand, while establishing it as a friendly and helpful place to go to find answers to government questions.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJessica Milcetich\u003c/strong\u003e is a Social Media and Digital Strategist on the USA.gov Outreach Team at the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA).\u003c/em\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n"}
