The Federal Social Media Registry provides the singular source that allows social media platforms to quickly collect real government accounts—emphasizing the critical need to ensure the trust, quality and security of citizen engagement.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen the public searches for the new \u003ca href=\"https://www.facebook.com/Central.Intelligence.Agency\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCentral Intelligence Agency\u003c/strong\u003e Facebook account\u003c/a\u003e, many different accounts pop up—but only one of them is managed by the actual CIA. Now, with a widespread verification system in place, citizens can identify the real government account by a blue checkmark. The Registry is the official repository of more than 3,000+ social media accounts from across the federal government.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFake accounts, misinformation and phishing scams can create barriers between citizens and public services on the Internet.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFollowing a fake celebrity, for instance, is not the same as following a fake emergency alert, and Facebook’s effort to address this difference underscores increasing understanding and support for the needs of public services and social media.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVerification of federal government accounts will:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eImprove discoverability of official public services\u003c/strong\u003e in Graph Search, News Feed, and many other Facebook products where accounts are shown.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDisplay a verified badge that gives citizens confidence\u003c/strong\u003e that they are connecting with the real public service, and reduces incentive for impersonation.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eProvide agencies more confidence\u003c/strong\u003e that social media platforms can provide a safe, reliable means for sharing and engaging with citizens.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003ch2 id=\"api-speeds-verification-process\"\u003eAPI Speeds Verification Process\u003c/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTraditionally, social media platforms verify accounts on a case-by-case basis working individually with agencies, an inconsistent process that confuses the digital citizen experience.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe worked with innovators at \u003ca href=\"https://18f.gsa.gov/\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e18F\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https://www.data.gov/\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eData.gov\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/a\u003e to improve delivery of the federal-wide registry API by creating a one-click export function that condenses the federal-wide data Facebook needed into a shared service custom fit for their verification process.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003ca href=\"https://digital.gov/communities/social-media/\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSocialGov Community\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/a\u003e, including almost 700 digital engagement and social media managers from across the federal government, is dedicated to finding new and better ways to use social media to measurably improve public services and make them more cost effective.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe look forward to continuing working with Facebook on improving the citizen user experience for all public services.
