We’ve compiled a sample of the activities that also show how different agencies are using different social media tools in support of a common goal.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been leading the way all month, \u003ca href=\"http://www.epa.gov/earthday/onlinechats.html\"\u003ehosting Twitter chats every Tuesday\u003c/a\u003e at 2pm EDT, with the hashtag #ActOnClimate. To help people take person action on climate change, EPA’s also sharing a daily tip on social media (\u003ca href=\"https://www.facebook.com/EPA\"\u003eFacebook\u003c/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https://twitter.com/epagov\"\u003eTwitter\u003c/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https://plus.google.com/+EPAgov/about\"\u003eGoogle+\u003c/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"http://www.flickr.com/photos/usepagov\"\u003eFlickr\u003c/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"http://www.instagram.com/epagov\"\u003eInstagram\u003c/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"http://www.pinterest.com/epagov/act-on-climate/\"\u003ePinterest\u003c/a\u003e, and \u003ca href=\"http://blog.epa.gov/blog/category/earthmonthtips/\"\u003etheir blog\u003c/a\u003e) and on a \u003ca href=\"http://www.epa.gov/earthday/actonclimate/index.html\"\u003eWeb page\u003c/a\u003e, according to Jessica Orquina, EPA’s social media lead.”\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"\u003e“Our program colleagues worked with our public affairs folks to develop the tips. Then our multimedia shop turned them into shareable graphics, sized so they’d work well in Twitter and Facebook,” Jeffrey Levy, Director of Web Communications at EPA, says. “Then my team (Web/social media) developed mechanisms to share them. We all talked throughout so the end product would work for the mechanisms we intended (e.g., we provided image dimensions to the multimedia folks).”\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"\u003eToday, EPA has a splash page up replacing its home page for the day. It features the 12 tips that were shared, retweeted, etc. the most through April, rotating every hour through the day. EPA’s also using the splash page to \u003c/span\u003e\u003ca style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http://www.epa.gov/earthday/widgets/index.htm#actonclimate\"\u003elaunch a new widget\u003c/a\u003e \u003cspan style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"\u003ethat provides all the tips, changing daily. They far surpassed their goal of 500 supporters, getting 904 people to share their message with a combined following of 2.7 million people. Here’s what tweet streams looked like after the \u003ca href=\"https://twitter.com/cbdawson/status/458638405778157568/photo/1\"\u003eThunderclap went off\u003c/a\u003e.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEPA has had support from a number of other federal agencies in promoting Earth Day, including the National Science Foundation (NSF)’s \u003ca href=\"https://plus.google.com/events/cs6bkbm1258crjae7fs8mhatkus\"\u003eGoogle Hangout on biodiversity\u003c/a\u003e that discussed building robots representing various features of insects and other animals and citizen science getting involved in biodiversity issues.
