Maybe the weather is warm, beautiful, sunny. Maybe you’re looking forward to a few days of boating while the rest of the country battles ice storms, snow drifts and various states of emergency. (We can dream, can’t we?)\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut before you venture out onto that blue paradise, you probably need a few important items to ensure smooth sailing. Like an electronic chart for navigation? Or real-time information on coastal conditions?\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEasy. Just pull out your smartphone or tablet (or God forbid your laptop!) and head on over to \u003ca href=\"http://www.oceanservice.noaa.gov\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ewww.oceanservice.noaa.gov\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/a\u003e, the multi-screen-friendly homepage for \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/about.html\"\u003eNOAA’s National Ocean Service\u003c/a\u003e,\u003c/strong\u003e the nation’s ocean and coastal agency.**\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e**\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNOS’s new design uses a responsive approach that is both elegant and action-oriented: Not only does it automatically resize to fit large desktop screens and a variety of tablet and smartphones, but it’s also much easier to scan and read. Most important, the new format puts the most popular NOS products and resources front and center for streamlined access from the homepage, including:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n  \u003cul\u003e\n    \u003cli\u003e\n      Quick links to \u003cstrong\u003enautical charts\u003c/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003ereal-time tides and currents\u003c/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003edata\u003c/strong\u003e\n    \u003c/li\u003e\n    \u003cli\u003e\n      The \u003cstrong\u003eportal page for post-Sandy restoration projects\u003c/strong\u003e and activities\n    \u003c/li\u003e\n    \u003cli\u003e\n      The agency\u0026#8217;s \u003cstrong\u003emost popular Ocean Facts\u003c/strong\u003e (So, what is the \u003ca href=\"http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/bermudatri.html\"\u003eBermuda Triangle\u003c/a\u003e, exactly?)\n    \u003c/li\u003e\n    \u003cli\u003e\n      The \u003cstrong\u003elatest NOS podcast\u003c/strong\u003e on topical ocean and coastal news and issues\n    \u003c/li\u003e\n    \u003cli\u003e\n      Reference page of \u003cstrong\u003ecoastal hazards\u003c/strong\u003e with links to specific tools and information (Did you know that \u003ca href=\"http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/hazards/natural-hazards/\"\u003eHABs are a real threat\u003c/a\u003e? NOAA\u0026#8217;s NOS forecasts them.)\n    \u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003c/ul\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003e\n    \u003cstrong\u003eThe data behind the redesign\u003c/strong\u003e\u003cbr /\u003e Like those agencies and bureaus before it, NOS (and NOAA in general) is experiencing a significant increase in traffic to its webpages from visitors using mobile devices of all types. Of the 1.5 million visits the NOS homepage receives per month, 25 percent of those come from mobile users. And this figure is only expected to grow. NOS has already transferred its top-level pages to the new design,  and given the increasing mobile demand, the NOS digital team will continue converting more content over time.\n  \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e(P.S.: You didn’t hear this from me, but we hope to see a responsive design for the main NOAA.gov homepage in the not-so-distant future, too.
