A number of agencies took advantage of native mobile device functionality including \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2013/12/05/u-s-census-bureau-dwellr-app/\" title=\"U.S. Census Bureau Dwellr App\"\u003eU.S. Census’ Dwellr\u003c/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2013/07/25/noaas-whale-alert-ship-strike-reduction-for-right-whales-app/\" title=\"NOAA’s Whale Alert – Ship Strike Reduction for Right Whales App\"\u003eNOAA’s Whale Alert\u003c/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2013/10/24/dolphin-and-whale-apps-from-noaa-fisheries/\" title=\"Dolphin and Whale Apps from NOAA Fisheries\"\u003eDolphin \u0026amp; Whale 911, and See \u0026amp; ID Dolphins \u0026amp; Whales\u003c/a\u003e, U.S. Coast Guard’s \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2013/11/21/coast-guard-hswl-app/\" title=\"Coast Guard HSWL App\"\u003eHSWL App\u003c/a\u003e, and National Park Service’s \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2013/06/20/nps-chesapeake-explorer-app/\" title=\"NPS Chesapeake Explorer App\"\u003eNPS Chesapeake Explorer App\u003c/a\u003e.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUpgrades and Makeovers for Existing Mobile Products\u003c/strong\u003e — FEMA added a \u003ca href=\"http://www.fema.gov/disaster-reporter\"\u003edisaster reporter feature\u003c/a\u003e to the \u003ca href=\"http://www.fema.gov/smartphone-app\"\u003eFEMA App,\u003c/a\u003e the Center’s for Disease Control added \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2013/10/31/new-outbreaks-but-no-zombies-on-cdcs-solve-the-outbreak/\"\u003enew outbreaks to their Solve the Outbreak app\u003c/a\u003e and the U.S. Census added new economic indicators to the \u003ca href=\"http://apps.usa.gov/americas-economy.shtml\"\u003eAmerica’s Economy\u003c/a\u003e app. The Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory \u003ca href=\"http://apps.usa.gov/alternative-fueling-stationp-locator.shtml\"\u003ecreated an iOS app\u003c/a\u003e version of the \u003ca href=\"http://apps.usa.gov/alternative-fuel-locator.shtml\"\u003ealternative fuel locator mobile website\u003c/a\u003e and the National Gallery of Art added an \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2013/12/26/your-art-now-on-android/\" title=\"Your Art App Now on Android\"\u003eAndroid version of their Your Art app\u003c/a\u003e.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAPIs and Code Sharing Continued to Expand\u003c/strong\u003e — While the Digital Government Strategy required \u003ca href=\"http://www.data.gov/developers/page/developer-resources\"\u003edevelopment of API’s\u003c/a\u003e as well as mobile products, some agencies took bigger steps to make it easier for developers to access government code.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cul class=\"how_to_mobile_list\"\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003eAs part of their Digital Government Strategy mobile implementation, the Department of Labor \u003ca href=\"http://www.dol.gov/digital-strategy/DigitalGovernance7-2.htm\"\u003emobilized their developer website for anytime, anywhere access to their API\u0026#8217;s\u003c/a\u003e. Labor also developed an agency wide software development kit (SDK) that makes agency API\u0026#8217;s \u003ca href=\"https://github.com/USDepartmentofLabor/Android_DOLDataSDK/wiki\"\u003emore easily accessible for mobile development\u003c/a\u003e.\u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003eLike they did with the \u003ca title=\"U.S. Census America’s Economy App\" href=\"http://apps.usa.gov/americas-economy.shtml\"\u003eAmerica\u0026#8217;s Economy app\u003c/a\u003e last year, the U.S. Census Bureau released their new app \u003ca title=\"U.S. Census Bureau Dwellr App\" href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2013/12/05/u-s-census-bureau-dwellr-app/\"\u003eDwellr\u003c/a\u003e with \u003ca href=\"http://www.census.gov/developers/\"\u003eAPI documentation\u003c/a\u003e that allows users to create their own app using Census data.\u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003eA number of agencies ran mobile related challenges at Challenge.gov, including ones for \u003ca href=\"http://mymoneyappup.challengepost.com/\"\u003emobile product ideas,\u003c/a\u003e \u003ca href=\"http://combatfeedinghack.challengepost.com/\"\u003eapp development\u003c/a\u003e and even the \u003ca href=\"http://www.health2con.com/devchallenge/mobilizing-data-for-pressure-ulcer-prevention-challenge/\"\u003emobilization of their data\u003c/a\u003e.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCross Agency Sharing Multiplied.\u003c/strong\u003e There was an influx of cross agency sharing of mobile development practices, tools and solutions. In conjunction with the Federal CIO Council, we developed the \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/resources/mobile-application-development-program/\" title=\"Mobile Application Development Program\"\u003eMobile Application Development Program\u003c/a\u003e. To help us create the program, agencies in the \u003ca href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/communities/\" title=\"Mobile\"\u003eMobileGov Community of Practice\u003c/a\u003e shared\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cul class=\"how_to_mobile_list\"\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003eProcurement documents to create \u003ca title=\"Mobile SOW and Developer Qualifications\" href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/resources/mobile-sow-and-developer-qualifications/\"\u003esample mobile Statements of Work (SOWs)\u003c/a\u003e\u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\u003ca title=\"Mobile Product Testing Guidelines and Resources\" href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2013/08/22/mobile-product-testing-guidelines/\"\u003eMobile testing tools, practices, scripts, and time\u003c/a\u003e to actually help agencies test mobile products\u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\u003ca title=\"Mobile User Experience Guidelines and Recommendations\" href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/resources/mobile-user-experience-guidelines/\"\u003eUser Experience Guidelines and Recommendations\u003c/a\u003e\u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003eMobile code on the \u003ca title=\"Federal Mobile Code Sharing Catalog Is Here\" href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/2013/05/13/federal-mobile-code-sharing-catalog-is-here/\"\u003eMobile Code Catalog\u003c/a\u003e for other agencies to leverage\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhat to Expect in 2014.\u003c/strong\u003e As we gaze into our Mobile Gov crystal ball for 2014, we see\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cul class=\"how_to_mobile_list\"\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMore Agency Sharing.\u003c/strong\u003e Like they did for \u003ca title=\"Mobile User Experience Guidelines and Recommendations\" href=\"/preview/gsa/digitalgov.gov/bc-archive-content-3/resources/mobile-user-experience-guidelines/\"\u003eMobile User Experience Guidelines and Recommendations\u003c/a\u003e, the Mobile Gov Community of Practice will continue to gather agencies together to build government-wide expertise in mobile. Expect events around responsive design, native development and other mobile areas soon.\u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\u003cb\u003eIncreased Focus on User Experience.\u003c/b\u003e Agencies are placing more importance on usability and user experience as they build and update mobile products. The advanced ones will be heavily engaging with their users to accomplish it.\u003c/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\u003cb\u003eEmphasis on Code Sharing.\u003c/b\u003e Agencies will continue to increase their code sharing for development and reuse.
