Simply put, “APIs are a better way to get government information and services into the hands of the people who need them.”\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo help agencies better understand APIs, DigitalGov University hosted a webinar, \u003cstrong\u003eAn Introduction to APIs\u003c/strong\u003e, with experts from NASA and CDC. The webinar explains why APIs are important and how you can use them to meet requirements of the \u003ca href=\"http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2012/05/23/roadmap-digital-government\"\u003eDigital Government Strategy\u003c/a\u003e.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sup8Q_NuIxI\u0026amp;w=600]\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAttendees have already said the most useful part was hearing these case studies:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJim Wilson\u003c/strong\u003e of NASA talked about \u003ca href=\"https://s3.amazonaws.com/digitalgov/_legacy-img/2012/07/api-webinar-series-apis-for-dummies.pdf\"\u003ehow pulling APIs into NASA.gov\u003c/a\u003e (PDF, 1.5 MB, 7 pages) has helped them \u003ca href=\"http://www.nasa.gov/\" target=\"_blank\"\u003erelease content and data\u003c/a\u003e to the public more quickly and easily. It’s also made their internal publishing processes more efficient. Before they began using APIs, the process of adding new content–especially video content–was cumbersome and labor intensive. It required them to:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eGenerate linking files\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eCut and paste photos and other multimedia\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ePublish pages in multiple ways\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow they simply upload a video and tag it. Via API, the video is distributed on multiple channels in real-time.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eFred Smith\u003c/strong\u003e spoke about \u003ca href=\"https://s3.amazonaws.com/digitalgov/_legacy-img/2012/07/api-webinar-series-apis-for-dummies-smith.pdf\"\u003eCDC’s content syndication program\u003c/a\u003e (PDF, 1.9 MB, 5 pages) and how it provides for the automatic export of web content from a CDC.gov page to a partner’s Web page in real-time. This has proven especially valuable during public health emergencies, when it’s critical for partner sites–such as state and local health departments–to pull the most current health information from the authoritative source. The result is that government is able to use a more efficient publishing model and consumers get accurate, trusted information and services.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGray Brooks\u003c/strong\u003e from GSA’s Digital Services Innovation Center provided lots of helpful tips for agencies to get started.
